Why I Stopped Being a “Healer” To Make Space For a Higher Creative Calling

Sometimes you have to let go of what you “should” be doing to make room for what you’re really meant to do (like standing at the top of the world with your arms wide open, knowing you’ve found your home and your true calling).

I first figured out that I was a healer when I was traveling in India in 2004-2005 and had my big spiritual awakening. It was one of several latent gifts I uncovered, along with my intuitive senses of clairvoyance and clairaudience, during a ten-month journey through the country that included a lot of intense spiritual practice and studying with different masters.

Even though I didn’t know how to read tarot at the time, I found I could tell things about people they never shared with anyone just by pulling some regular playing cards and using them like a tarot deck. That was cool, but my healing gifts became more clear when I was able to intuitively see the layers of emotional pain that were covering the energy body of my romantic partner, and help her lift those off as if they were a second skin. Or like a mask, like in those sci-fi movies.

The results she experienced were profound, but it felt like second nature to me. I had no desire to be a healer then — I didn’t even want anyone to know that I was a healer, and kept it secret!

It wasn’t until a few years later when I started studying shamanic energy healing with a legit healer that I learned how to work these energies with real consistency. Then in 2010 I started breathwork healer training and began a 6-year course of study with a renowned healer that finally ended up with me making the hard choice to become a professional “Healer.”

That was a huge leap for me—it forced me to get real about my own healing, and my commitment to help others heal. I lead many healing groups and courses online and in person, and worked with dozens of clients one on one. And I developed my own system of somatic energy healing in order to manage the challenges of being a highly sensitive wild-soul creative.

I learned so much through all that—probably the biggest lesson being that a true healer’s job is to be a clear channel for Source to move through them—but the point of this post is to talk about why I quit and why that matters to you, which I assume is what you’re here to learn too, so I’ll try and stick to the point… ;)

You see, I believe that being a healer who people come to for healing is an older and outdated model. Yes, there’s still a place for healers in society, especially those that are as sick as the majority of our modern world, but that role needs to shift and evolve to empower the individual. In my view, the ideal role of a healer is to teach people how to stay healthy and heal themselves.

The thing is, my passion is to help you learn how to heal yourself, but not just so that you can be healed, or that you can be a healer yourself. My passion is to help you learn how to heal, because it opens so many doors to sharing your magic with the world! Because healing is the most effective path to unleashing your creative expression, to being able to share your truth, and ultimately to live your true purpose.

Once we’ve dialed in the healing and developed the ability to listen and follow our true soul callings, then we can start to build our lives around that, so the path we’re walking is in true alignment.

I’m going to share the basics of my four-step Soul Aligned Creator Method I’ve developed to teach my clients how to live a fully-expressed life of purpose and fulfillment, but first I think you’ll be served by having some more context on how I got there.

You see, when I started on the path of the healer, it felt good. People had really great results, I was able to make a difference in their lives, my heart was lit. And this went on for several years.

What I didn't understand was, why wasn’t the path of the healer lighting me up any more?

The answer: It wasn't feeding my soul.

If you’re an intensely creative (and intellectual) human like me, you understand how important it is for your creative callings to be put to greater use. And I’m way too much of a creative rebel soul to devote myself solely to healing people.

I needed to find a new model for my life and work based on my own authentic inner truth, but one that also allowed me to put more of my other gifts to use. To embody my personal evolution over the years of my professional healing practice, while also expressing my intensely creative heart and soul and create real, lasting transformation for people. I needed to get my inner world and outer expressions into greater alignment so I could find my happiness again.

How to get to that new fully integrated place of soul alignment, though…? I had to take a lot of time for myself to try a bunch of different things:

  • This was at the start of the pandemic, and collective energies were really off the hook. I took an extended social media sabbatical, which opened up a lot of space for my own creative energy to flow.

  • After running some successful online retreats and workshops, I stopped doing my healing work altogether, focusing instead on different sources of income and creative pursuits that were calling me, like working on my new book (coming 2023).

  • I learned how to follow my intuition and come out ahead at casino games. It showed me how there are so many ways to make money. And while that can be fun, that definitely wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life.

  • I learned how to pick stocks and trade in the stock market, but I soon learned that wasn’t feeding my soul.

  • Then I moved to trading cryptocurrency, and that felt more in alignment. it was exciting. This was the future of money and we were living it now!

Through all this, my book writing really kept my creative soul lit, but I definitely hit on some rough ground along the way, struggling through my share of dark nights of the soul, and diving deeper into my own personal healing in relationship with my partner. I knew it was just a matter of time before I would have to get real about my true soul work again.

Crypto was trading fun to learn and be a part of for a while. I made some decent money, but it never captivated me enough to become a really great trader. Then the market crashed in early 2022 and I lost what little interest remained (along with a good deal of the gains I’d made in the prior year).

All these experiences showed me what I knew deep down all along: it was time to figure out what I really wanted to do with all the learning and healing I’d gone through in my life, and put my creative and spiritual gifts to work in a new way. It was time to get back to my true soul work.

I needed some help to figure out what to do, though. I didn’t want to do it like I’d done before, because honestly I’d burned out pretty hard on my work. It needed to be fun and fulfilling for both my clients and me if it was going to be sustainable!

I decided to hire a business coach once and for all, and finally found someone who I thought would be great. She cost a small fortune but I had a good feeling about her and high hopes. Unfortunately, we worked together for a few sessions and got nowhere. Yes, she knew what she was doing, but she just didn’t get me. What she was suggesting didn’t align with what I needed at all. My hopes were dashed….

I was all but ready to give up when I found a very special coach who understood my unique needs and gifts, and who was able to meet me where I actually was. She helped me work from the inside out to uncover some old patterns and beliefs that were holding me back, so I could actually figure out what I wanted to do with my work. After doing some deep work together for just a month, I landed on something completely unexpected!

I’d had so much fun and incredible growth through writing my book, it finally became crystal clear that what I really wanted to do was teach writing as a tool for transformation. Through that, I’d be able to bring together all my life experience and training in meditation, healing, breathwork and writing over the years, and apply it to a framework to teach the power and practice of writing from the soul. This would both stretch me creatively, while also being a tool to help others truly transform their lives.

I launched a summer session of Writing Wild, and led a remarkable group of people through a life-changing two month journey. The results that each participant experienced were truly remarkable, and shocked even me! Most importantly, it was fun and rewarding for everyone involved—myself included.

Now I’m laser-focused on teaching my clients how to heal themselves through their own spiritual practice, but most importantly, reaching their fully expressed and soul-aligned creative joy and purpose. I only offer writing coaching and spiritual mentorship for two-months minimum to start, because that’s the level of commitment it takes to have real and lasting results. I’ve been blessed to work with the best clients ever, at the deepest level yet, and we’re landing some truly amazing outcomes from our work together.

Writing is my personal favorite self-expression and transformation tool, but my clients include artists, healers, professionals, a medical intuitive, an accountant, and other magical wild souls of all kinds. Something we share in common is a special way of seeing and being in the world that's unique to each of us, while also having experienced lifetime of struggle around authentically pursuing our truth and sharing it in a way that feels good, but’s also effective.

That last point is so key, because we each want our work to make a greater impact in the world, to have that feeling that we’re living a life of true fulfillment, doing work that matters. But it also needs to feel good and bring us joy.

If you know how that struggle feels, you know how hard it can be to break through the resistance and launch, or “ship the work,” as Seth Godin puts it. What makes my approach unique is I don’t subscribe to external formulas. I believe we need to be totally anchored in our own joy and genius, to let that be the engine for everything that we do, because when we have that inner fire, we have all the energy we need to fulfill our bigger reason for being here.

That being said, I’m not against frameworks that empower the individual to create their lives from an authentic inner calling. That’s why I developed the one you’re about to learn.

The Soul Aligned Creator Method

These is the four-step framework I’ve developed to fully unleash our inner joy and genius, and create a purpose-driven life of inner and outer alignment. The method we use in my mentorship and coaching practice:

  1. First, uncovering the blocks and fears that hold us back. These are the frontlines of our resistance. They go all the way back to our childhood and ancestral lineage, and even our past lives, if you can believe it! The practices I teach to identify, integrate and release these energies are highly targeted and effective.

  2. Second, developing the spiritual practices we need to grow and maintain momentum, while creating a strong foundation of soul embodiment in ourselves. It’s through our practice that we learn to connect with our inner callings so we can let those emerge and be expressed through us. And experience the comfort of resting deeply in ourselves.

  3. Third, finding the higher mission we're here for, so we can merge our soul callings with our creative passion, and stay motivated on the path. Because we need to have some concrete goals to put all this healing and inner work into! This is the driving reason we’re here on earth—without clarity on this, we often feel lost and unanchored.

  4. Fourth, sharing our truth and our gifts with the world, in line with our higher mission. Without this step we never feel fully complete, because we haven’t experienced the true gift of the human experience, which is to be of greater service and express our unique soul magic.

Is this ringing a bell with you at all?

If you’re a sensitive wild soul like me and most of my clients, you’ve probably had a few dances with the blocks and fears that hold you back from sharing your truth, and spent way more time on the sidelines than you’d like. I get that completely. I’d also venture to guess that you’ve experienced your share of success and happiness in your life, so you know how that feels too.

There's a specific path to follow that must be tailored to your own unique needs—a set of practices I’ve developed that you can learn and make your own—but the truth is it’s really not all that complicated. You just need the right guidance to work through your energy blocks and belief systems and develop a line of communication with your soul, along with the guidance and accountability to keep you on track in pursuing the path of your higher purpose.

And yes, you can figure out how to do this on your own. You can read posts like these and take courses. Or you can work with someone like me who’s able to see your blindspots and guide you expertly through the process of overcoming your blocks and fears, and healing the underlying wounds so you can get their sooner.

Bottom line: there’s no reason to keep struggling if you aren’t happy with the work you’re doing or the results your getting, or where you’ve found yourself in your life. I’ve re-envisioned and recreated my life and career path many times over, and so can you.

You deserve to have the joy and peace of being aligned in your inner self and your outer life. And yes, it can be uncomfortable and challenging…it's hard work at times, but what truly great things in life aren't?
