For the Love of Mercury (and making your art!)

Sunset with Joy and the little sea bird — Ventura Beach, California

At the time of writing we’re about midway through the current Mercury Retrograde period, but I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while! I decided to push it out today in celebration of my "Mercury Love-In" Sale (30% off private sessions and the Soul-Fire Code). Hope it helps! Enjoy. :)

The Mercury Retrograde period is generally misunderstood as a period where the challenges of communications and operating on the earth plane are intensified. In truth, this is the very best period for intuitive creative souls to thrive in, because it offers us an opportunity to do our deepest work. It can also help with providing a wonderful sort of energetic force shield from the energies of the world.

While so many others are busy running around like chickens, struggling with getting things done the way they usually do, you have this extra keen ability to operate from an even deeper place than usual. Your true Soul Power is magnified and welcomed into play.

You may find yourself needing to work through a bit more of your own resistance at times as a result, but that’s easy enough — simply take a moment to witness the resistance and gently escort it out the door. I tend to do this by seeing and feeling that all too familiar energy, and then calling in a higher vibration energy to replace it.

Some interesting facts about Mercury you may not be aware of:

Mercury is a terrestrial planet—one of only four “rocky” planets in our solar system—composed primarily of iron. (Not the element Mercury! :)). A special NASA spacecraft—the Messenger—has been studying the planet for a while and has sent back some really great images and info (See BBC). One of the lead scientists on that project calls Mercury "an oddball planet", with a global, Earth-like magnetic field not found in either Venus or Mars, the other rocky planets (Red Orbit).

Being the closest of our planets to the sun, and because it has almost no atmosphere to retain heat, Mercury's surface experiences the greatest temperature variation of all the planets, ranging from –280 °F (–173 °C) at night to 800 °F (427 °C) during the day at some equatorial regions (Wikipedia). And the planet has ice caps in the shadow areas! Mercury also orbits the sun far faster than any other of our planets — only 88 days, as opposed to our 365 on Earth.

Like Earth, Mercury's core is made of molten iron. Unlike Earth, however, the core that takes up about 60% of the planets mass! It is the most iron-rich planet in our solar system. (You are probably aware of some of the interesting magnetic properties of iron, but did you know that it is the "workhorse" of metals on earth, and the one that steel is forged from?)

Mercury is a cosmic stardust and meteor shower magnet: "'If our scenario is correct, Mercury is a giant dust collector,' said Joseph Hahn, a planetary dynamist in the Austin, Texas, office of the Space Science Institute and coauthor of the study. 'The planet is under steady siege from interplanetary dust and then regularly passes through this other dust storm, which we think is from comet Encke.'" (NASA)

Having been bombarded over millions of years, the planet is covered with countless craters, all of which are named for great artists! "Shakespeare, John Lennon and Walt Disney are there. Alvin Ailey is too, as are Bach, Basho, the Brontës, Hemingway, Faulkner, Kahlil Gibran, Michelangelo and 361 others, all cataloged in 'The Gazetteer and Atlas of Astronomy.' The planet is a hot, fast, magnetic monument to earthly imagination." (NY Times)

So, how does Mercury actually influence us and what to do with it?

It’s no question that the planetary bodies in our solar system each have their own unique properties and influence. Just ask any professional astrologer. (Having worked with a brilliant vedic astrologer in the past, I can attest to the remarkable ability for someone who understands the traditions to predict and explain the influence of the stars and planets.)

And considering the natural elements, properties and experiences of the planet Mercury, it’s no wonder how deeply affected we are by its movements! (Consider the tremendous influence of the moon and the presence of the earth that you’ve experienced firsthand. There is great consciousness and power in these great bodies! Just don't ask a skeptical scientist to try and explain it).

As the Mercury Retrograde period is a call to go inwards and work with what you have, it can tend to bring out some of those shadow aspects and trigger feelings of vulnerability. And when the pain inside is flared up and not dealt with, people tend to speed up and become more reactive and unconscious. So slow down and go be with what's inside you. Heal it with love and attention. Make your art!

This is my favorite time to tap into Universal Energy and creative flow. You can always dive deeper into the vast mystery of who you are and have some fun with it. You will emerge victorious through the pure strength of your Creative Soul. ;)

This is such a great time to really dive into the fire of your Soul, and work with all the juicy stuff you’ve got inside so you can really come out swinging in the world. I’m talking bat meets ball cracking home run kind of work!

Here is a calendar of 2015 Mercury Retrograde phases, including the important pre-shadow, post-shadow, and station periods.

Work with what you have, it’s limitless and truly holds all that you need and so much more...!
