A Life Raft To Hold On To When Things Fall Apart

I'm not going to pretend, this past week has been pretty rough over here. How's it been for you? It seems like we just can't get a break with one thing coming after another. The thing is, the cosmos has its own agenda. The more ways we can find to maneuver through whatever cosmic and energetic muckiness comes our way, the better we're able to show up and keep shining no matter what. (Because there's always gonna be something!)

So that's what I've got for you today: a simple but concrete approach to lift yourself up and move through whatever is coming your way.

Now, with the grand finale to this eclipse season coming on Sunday night (or Monday depending where in the world you are), the super full moon eclipse in Scorpio has got plenty of juicy energy for us to work with. And of course Mercury Retrograde jumped in this week mid-eclipse season, which usually provides some interesting perspective and a little drama as things that've been patched together poorly show their weakness and systems fall apart.

But you probably don’t want to hear all about that—you have enough of your own problems to manage let alone the world’s and the cosmos's. Am I right? Here's the thing, though: it's always better to be aware and work with the energies than just have them work you without you realizing what's going on.

Now, the standard stuff applies: you should give yourself the space to rest a lot Sunday and Monday, lay low as much as possible, take it easy and take care of your needs. All of what I recommended in my message and blog on self-care for this eclipse season. These things can be helpful for sure.

There's one thing that’s even more helpful, though. And it has the potential to increase your peace of mind and groundedness many times over. What is the one thing that can make you feel so much better, can give you a sense of hope, a life raft to hold on to when everything else seems to be falling away?

It’s this one simple yet enormously essential thing: staying focused on what really matters.

And what’s the simplest way to do that? Pursuing the deepest callings of your heart and soul.

Of course, I’m not just talking any old desires, like Netflix and chillin', with a bottle, or eating Haagen Dazs strawberry, vanilla and dulce de leche ice cream, or doing these all at once (win!). I'm talkin' the callings your heart and soul are aching for deep down inside, the things that will help you complete your mission in this life—what you came here for.

Now, I know this sounds big. Maybe you don’t know what your mission or purpose is. Or maybe you just can’t right now. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to complete your whole mission, save the world, and be back home in time to serve up a feast for dinner. You just need to pursue one thing that really matters to you, something that raises yourself up and improves your life in some way. Something that your heart can really feast on.

So this is a little secret to really breaking through that fog and despair that sometimes settles in for all of us: it’s holding onto that something that truly matters to you. Something that somehow improves your life through the accomplishing of it. And working towards that. (Period.)

I get that this can be a challenge in itself. You're tired and you've been working hard all week (all life, let's be real). But you’ve got to push through the inertia and just make some progress on this one special thing, because the momentum of that carries you forward into the future you're creating. The energy of that focus and intentional work can really lift you up into a higher place.

When you’re focused on something that really matters to you AND improves your life in some way, it’s hard not to feel better. But what if you can't figure out what that is? Or you're overwhelmed and not quite sure where to start?

The best tool you have is right in your hands. A pen, a keyboard, a smartphone, your wits: writing is the best way to get to the bottom of all of it.

But why writing? Because taking the time to write opens the freedom for you to get all those divergent thoughts out of your head and onto the page! It’s like having a conversation with a really smart friend who knows you well and has a direct line to Source. Then all those divergent notes popping off in your head can finally be sorted through and maybe even organized into something that makes sense, if not a masterpiece of symphonic clarity.

Now, I don’t know why or how it works, but it does. I believe it has to do with the need to express ourselves creatively, to speak our truth. The need to unleash our innermost selves and the magic that comes with finally doing that.

And maybe it takes some time and practice for this flow to turn into a crystalline stream of clarity, but I can say without reservation that writing solves so many of the problems that we only wish Netflix, wine, and intimate relationships could do for us. And it does so in a way that is more efficient and easily accessible than anything else I can think of.

To help you along I've drafted some writing prompts you can use for your own self inquiry this weekend. Read them over to reflect, then copy them into your journal or wherever you like to write. This can open up huge doors to make the most of this special time — especially if you take action around what your heart is calling!

What is something your heart is wanting to explore that has remained unspoken or unseen inside you?

How can you allow yourself the space to explore that? (Writing, making art, or other creative pathways—feel what calls you)

What's a creative project or endeavor that really matters to you right now?

What’s one thing you can do in the next few days to make progress towards that? (Just even little steps are good!)

If you're excited to rock your writing practice and stoke the fires of your passion and purpose to new heights, consider joining the Writing Wild beta program.
