As A Man Thinketh by James Allen
Amazing book, ahead of its time, by a man who one day quit his job and decided to take up his true passion — writing from the heart (100 years ago!). You can also find it free online.

The Reluctant Healer by David Elliott. (This is his first book. You can actually download his full latest book free at David Elliott Healing.)

I love this book. David’s voice is straightforward and unique, and his sincerity cuts right through the pages. Having grown up on a farm in Kentucky from a lineage of farmers, his style is grounded and direct. You may already be familiar with a lot of the concepts, and some of the analogies may even come off as simplistic, but that’s part of the beauty.

Even advanced practitioners will benefit from his nuanced descriptions of the chakras, his deep understanding of human violence and sexual abuse, and his heartful explanations and diagrams on the craft of healing. I enjoyed the autobiographical narrative, and the honesty with which David reveals his secrets and his weaknesses. His descriptions of dozens of clients and healing sessions are also a lot of fun, and keep the writing buoyant. I’ve found the book to be actually quite healing in itself – it’s a comfort just having it around!

The Diamond Sutra + The Sutra of Hui-Neng (Buddha’s famous sutra paired with Hui-Neng’s teachings = pure genius)

This has got to be one of my top 5 favorite books of all time. Hui-Neng is considered the godfather of Zen Buddhism, instantly awakened upon hearing a monk reciting the Diamond Sutra on the corner and went off to enroll himself in the monastery. His words cut right through the B.S. and he’s super unconventional. Fresh and fierce, and not at all what you might expect. Love it.
