Make Yourself a Refuge

island refuge

Where is your refuge?

For empaths, creators, and those who might have a tendency to worry unnecessarily about what other people think—fretting over how your self-expression is received—there is a solution. The best thing I have found is to establish a place of abiding peace, a set point to fall back on and rest inside. In nurturing this space daily, a sort of sanctuary is created. A place of refuge to return when our thoughts, fears and anxieties start getting the best of us. And in that space, the false truths of our human experience are released and transmuted in the fire of our spirit. The noble fire of Love and Truth.

Because we are human, we must work with what we have. Because we are divine, we have everything we need.

If you have not yet found a practice or path that works for you, just let me know. With more than 30 years experience in my own spiritual practice (literally), I might have a few pointers I can help you with.

Find your refuge – your inner sanctuary. Revel in the sweetness. Let it flourish and expand to infuse more of your earth walk with passionate presence. As the Buddha himself once put it, “Make yourself an island…make Truth your refuge, it is the only refuge.”

I touched on this in my newsletter Sunday, but didn’t have the room to expand as there was already so much to explore. If you would like to receive it next time, along with access to my private library of resources for introverts, creators, and heart-centered entrepreneurs, I invite you to sign up here. Vaya con dios. ~

Love and peace,
Always

Unexpectedly Delightful Wisdom From the Desert — on Being of Highest Service

San-Jacinto-Sunrise_Satya-Colombo_1280x750

Sunrise at San Jacinto Peak, rising 10,834 ft above Mojave Desert, California

It was a cold, quiet night in the desert and the stars shone bright in the sky — ten thousand glimmering sentries of the infinite mystery beyond. But for the occasional headlights of some traveler winding down the distant desert highway, all was still and quiet in the valley. And towering far above and beyond, that haunting majestic mountain guardian of the land, reaching at once to the sky, across the earth and deep down to its fiery core. Ever present yet seemingly shifting in her moods by the hour.

Dressed so gorgeously in a coat of snow that traced along her skin like the finest latticed lace gown of the gods, how could I not be captivated to spend every moment just staring in rapture at her glory…? Continue Reading →

Taking It On the Road: Pacific Northwest

Satya at Mt Tabor

Sunset at beautiful Mt. Tabor, Portland, Oregon

I learned something interesting about myself in the past weeks since I started on this last journey north from the land of angels lost and found… I actually LOVE being around people. It’s the quality of people that makes all the difference. Hanging, sharing, co-creating with incredible, bright stars doing amazing work. It’s a rush! I actually found myself a little addicted to it.

Since 2010 I’ve done 99% of my work online and through the internets. That’s all changing now, gradually, as I step into a new chapter of engaging with my life and work from a different space. Expanded ease and joy—joyful presence—no matter what I happen to be doing. Sure, there will always be those moments when “the stuff” hits the fan, or the darkness throws its long shadow over the light. But as I embrace this sweet as love approach, I find that those moments don’t seem to hit me as hard or long. (Also: Hitting my sweet spot with travel/adventure/life-mission rolled into one — always when I thrive!)  Continue Reading →

The Endless Wisdom of the Emerald Heart (For Life’s Big Questions)

emerald-heart-treasure_satya-colombo

There’s a tendency to look outside ourselves for guidance on the biggest questions of our lives. The absolute “fierce wisdom” truth, of course, is whatever you’re looking for can be drawn from the vast well of your own Self. Since the entire universe is inside you already, why not just stretch into that infinite expanse and call forth the love and guidance you seek? What will you find in that limitless expanse?

Perhaps this question is what keeps us from diving deeper to access this infinite power within us. The fear of unleashing our true power. What might happen then…?? Continue Reading →

A Simple Approach to Beating the Blues and Standing In Your Highest Power

Saranda

Reality getting you down? Make a getaway plan. For 20-25 Euros a night you can have a room with this view here in Saranda, Albania, swim in the Ionian Sea and eat some of the yummiest food ever. Read on for my core approach to beating the blues, plus more tips and my new course: 30 Days of Fun & Flow!

I’ve been a little up and down emotionally these past couple months. Actually, this whole year. It’s been a crazy year and I’ve been pushing the edges in my life and work — a lot. Can you relate?

Many of my friends have been experiencing an extremely challenging year, which has just started to let up a bit in recent weeks. And this kind of emotional experience is typical of many artists and Highly Sensitive People. Because we feel so strongly, we’re able to reach depths that allow us to penetrate the veils of the human condition. But it can also become a liability. When these kind of emotions start to spin out of control, it can be incredibly difficult to stay on top of your work.

A couple days back I was left to fend for myself in Albania when my sweetie took off for another adventure. Granted I’m in a beautiful place by the sea in my air-conditioned flat, with the most delicious food EVER just down the street… AND the way I live can be insanely challenging. With so many unknowns in my present and future, it can easily start to feel like the ground is slipping away when yet one more challenge rears it’s gorgeous face. So I have to do what it takes to step it up and stay on top of my game.

And for me — stepping up my game means:

Working harder to show up FIERCE and do the work, step into my Soul Power, and be real with where I’m at. So that’s what I done and wrote out my core approach in three steps, plus a few more for good measure below. I hope this helps! Try it out and let me know how it goes.*

At the Center of a Beautiful Life: MEDITATION (Calm, Nourished & Totally Lovable… Every Day)

“Breathing in, I calm my body.
Breathing out, I smile.
Dwelling in the present moment
I know this is a wonderful moment.”
–Thích Nhat Hanh, Being Peace

Quan Yin Meditation

Quan Yin, Goddess of Great Compassion (with wish-fulfilling and healing willow branch)

Some time ago I began searching for a daily practice that could provide nourishment on all levels — from my outlook and state of mind, to my physical and spiritual well-being. I’d been meditating for years, and could make a simple switch to drop into a deep state of Fierce Presence at will, but I wasn’t able to sustain a daily meditation practice for more than a month or two without intermittent pauses.

The thing is, my meditation practice has been the cornerstone of my life path for many years — a sanctuary of sanity — and I knew I was holding myself back by not committing to a regular daily practice. So, I resolved to cultivate a practice of mindful awareness on all levels, every day, led by my morning meditations. Since then I’ve experienced remarkable stretches of clarity, and some fascinating revelations!  Continue Reading →

Breathing and Being Peace with Thích Nhat Hanh

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.”
— Thích Nhat Hanh

thich nhat hanh omThích Nhat Hanh (born October 11, 1926) is a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist. He lives in the Plum Village Monastery in the Dordogne region in the South of France, traveling internationally to give retreats and talks.

I witnessed one of his talks at the Riverside Cathedral in New York, just after September 11th, 2001. I can that say without question he is the living embodiment of his teaching.

Here is an excerpt from the book, Being Peace by Thích Nhat Hanh:

“From time to time, to remind ourselves to relax, to be peaceful, we may wish to set aside some time for a retreat, a day of mindfulness, when we can walk slowly, smile, drink tea with a friend, enjoy being together as if we are the happiest people on Earth. This is not a retreat, it is a treat. During walking meditation, during kitchen and garden work, during sitting meditation, all day long, we can practice smiling. At first you may find it difficult to smile, and we have to think about why. Smiling means that we are ourselves, that we have sovereignty over ourselves, that we are not drowned into forgetfulness. This kind of smile can be seen on the faces of Buddhas and bodisattvas.

“I would like to offer one short poem you can recite from time to time, while breathing and smiling.  Continue Reading →

Lucky You {Freedom endless…passport optional}

airport of the soul

where do you want to go today?

In a world that’s ever changing,
a life that won’t stop moving.
a mind that keeps on ticking,
there’s only one constant.
One thing in the world you can count on.

Surprise?
It’s you.

Not the little you,
“small mind you,”
with its fears and doubts and neuroses.
That one is a bit of a mess.
Let’s face it. Messy…like life.
