The Art of Living Dangerously

Art of Living Dangerously - San Salvador

Cruising on the bus through San Salvador, El Salvador, at sunrise -- one of the world's most dangerous cities.

In the seven weeks I’ve been here in Central America I’ve gotten into some extremely interesting, bizarre and entertaining situations. To me ‘living dangerously’ is just a way of life I’ve followed as long as I can remember — it means not being afraid to take calculated risks, and pushing myself out of my comfort zones to have a more full experience of this existence.

This is the only way I really know how to live, and it’s definitely not for everyone — but it’s so worth it! Some life-shifting experiences I’ve had pushing the edges thus far: I’ve made really great friends and met some of the most amazing people in the world; I’ve spent long nights walking the streets in search of adventure; I’ve stayed up dancing with friends until sunrise at least a dozen times; I’ve been attacked by a man with a broom after refusing to burn my boots in the fire (funny story!); I’ve eaten the most delicious street food ever, drank awesome local moon shine and had occasion to sample some fine medicinal herbs with the locals ;). Aside from a few bruises still from a near-death incident at Lago Atitlán I’ve been lucky to emerge from all my adventures none the worse for wear, and feeling stronger and better than ever.

All this is due to a specific approach to risk-taking I’ve developed that enables me to ride the edges without falling off the deep end for good — living dangerously is an art! Here then are a few pointers for a life of epic adventure and fun too, no matter where you are in your life….

Disclaimer: I’m not a physician or a counselor or have any kind of license for giving advice, so consult someone who does before doing anything risky, and don’t take anything as I say as a personal recommendation for you. Please don’t ever put yourself in unnecessary risk without understanding fully what you’re getting yourself into, and the potential consequences, and always seek professional advice.  Continue Reading →

I Won’t Back Down (and looking for some good people to back me up) [Edge Notes]

hero's journey Less than two weeks ’til the journey. Wish I could say I’m excited right now, but at this point my biggest thrill is knocking off voluminous piles of miscellaneous work and preparations with each day that passes. And playing my ukulele whenever I get the chance (currently Neil Young’s Harvest Moon).

So I’ll cut to the chase for all our sakes with two announcements:

1. My first venture in teaching the Hero’s Journey material LIVE — in a gorgeous geodesic dome in Ojai, California.

The event is a 2-hour workshop on Saturday, Feb. 25th, combining guided meditation, breathwork healing and creative exploration. It’s called — surprise! — The Hero’s Journey: Creative Alchemy, Healing & Flow. Anyone in the SoCal area — I’d love to see you there and give you a big hug before I ship out! For more info, see the New Events Page.

2. I’m hiring! One (unpaid) intern/production coordinator, and one part-time interactive project manager/client whisperer.

A. For the intern/project coordinator position — I’m looking for someone super organized who understands the mission here, loves people, communities and engaging online, and has some relevant experience with project administration/coordinating. Seeking an 8-hour/week minimum commitment for 4-5 months. In exchange you get lots of attention, access to me and the courses we’re developing, and learn a bunch of really useful stuff for your life and work. This is a virtual position, as long as you can communicate during roughly Pacific time business hours. Contact me here, and let me know why you’re interested, and why you think you’d be right for this. Deadline: Feb. 24th.

B. For my company, iEnvision Media, I’m hiring a part-time interactive project manager/client whisperer with basic experience in WordPress web design. Weekly time commitment varies widely. Must jive with the vibe of our mission and clients (conscious companies/change-makers), have a track record of interactive project management and coordinating — either for yourself or for a company — and know your way around basic WordPress design. Work from anywhere as long as you’re available during Pacific time zone business hours. Please send resume and/or portfolio to hello (at) ienvisionmedia (dot) com with a brief introduction and your rate requirements. Deadline: Feb. 24th.

I wish I had something really inspiring and pithy to share here, but this is all that’s running in my head this morning — it’s this great song from Tom Petty…

“No, I won’t back down
You could stand me up at the gates of hell
But, I won’t back down
No, I’ll stand my ground…”
~ Tom Petty

In a world that seems to keep pushing you around, you gotta be willing to do whatever it takes to make it work for you.
Don’t ever give up on the dream — it always works out in the end! ;)

“Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out…”

Much love and blessings,

Please Tweet/share this with your friends — and thank you! :)

The Hero’s Journey: (Re)Awakening to the Call of Destiny

Himalayas

In the Himalayas on the Quest

Three weeks from today I land in Guatemala City, one of the top 10 most dangerous cities in the world (travel plans - don’t worry I don’t plan to stay long). It’s a huge landing for a significant phase in my longstanding quest for a better way of life — a life in full alignment with the truth of who I am. I’ve found that looking through the framework of the archetypal hero’s journey allows the essence of the quest to emerge with greater depth and insight.

The most interesting discovery of the past few days has been immense — it turns out the journey I’m undertaking now is not an entirely new one at all, but the continuation of one that I’ve been on since New York City circa 2003.

And here’s where the story takes an interesting turn — one that might intersect with your own:
